 Sex and Christmas

I will focus my current dissertation on Christmas, because that is holiday I am most familiar with from my childhood and upbringing. Whatever holiday you celebrate you celebrate though I'm sure you know it is no coincidence that they are all celebrated during the same time of year. The end of December has been celebrated long before organized religion took a firm hold on humanity as the coming of the sun god from pagan myth. In fact Jesus himself is known to have been born over the summer in June or July, but the Christians decided to celebrate his birthday at the end of December to make the religion more appealing to potential converts. So you get whatever the Christians promised and you can still carry on your traditional holiday celebration at the same time. By moving the day of the celebration of the most important Christian holiday, the religious leaders responsible actually created a flexibility in the celebration of the holiday that has led to the state of Christmas today.

Christmas has become so flexible in fact that the sociological environment it falls in every year manages to change it just a little bit more to fit it's needs. An example is the mass commercialization of the holiday throughout the years. retail does most of their business in the 4th quarter, all due to the spending frenzy that is spawned by the holiday, a tradition that has been cultivated by the very retail stores that thrive on it.

This flexibility has also led to many sexual connotations working it's way firmly into Christmas traditions celebrated the world over. The Christian and particularly the catholic repression of sex has gone so far as to remove humans from their natural sexual feelings. humans as animals have sexual desires and needs like any other type mammal. Any type of natural urge or feeling can not be destroyed completely, since these feelings come from our genetic makeup, and though they can be repressed or made dormant, or controlled, the genetic structure is still there and thus will work it's way out of the subconscious into the realty of our every day life. The perfect place for such repressed feelings to manifest would be at a time where the values being imposed are a little lax, a little flexible. The Christmas holiday is a perfect time for these feelings and desired to sneak out into the open without gaining much attention.

Lets take a look at how the release of sexual tension has worked it's way into the Christmas celebrations. First of all lets take a look at the tradition colors of Christmas, red and green. Green is a very earthy, natural color. Perfect to offset the heavily passionate red that alone may be to bold, or perhaps coupled with another color could be too sensuous. Jingle bells look quite a bit like anal beads, we all know what mistletoe provokes promiscuity of the lips, and is it a coincidence that the whip is a traditional Christmas instrument, used in orchestrations of Christmas pieces. The Christmas tree is another incredible example, how could such a falic thing become a symbol of such a Christian holiday? I've heard the German stories on how the tree became a tradition, the tree obviously served no symbolic purpose to the birth of christ, especially since the man was born in a desert. If anything we should have sandboxes in our homes that we put our presents into every year.

As you can see Christmas is an incredibly sexual holiday, a release from the pressure the church puts on it's disciples throughout the year. However how long can Christmas survive without becoming a full blown Christian orgy? While the catholic church refuses to adopt a no-tolerance policy on sexual abuse from it's members, it seems that the church is actually becoming tolerant of this previously deviant behavior and may soon come to accept the innuendoes that have been passed down from generation to generation over the last few 100 years, and Christmas will become a time for uninhibited release of sexual tension.
