Bon Bon Joey; the tragic life of the chocolate Kangaroo mascot.

In 1982 two partners, Joey Smithy and Edgar Brown embarked on a venture; their goal was to create the largest chocolate producer in Oceana. Based in Australia, they began eying real estate in the Philippians to take advantage of cheap labor and low coco bean prices. One of the first orders of business was to find a great logo, a trademark the world would recognize and love as their own chocolate mascot. Being of Australian origin, they thought of the typical local mascots to be their representative; the platypus, the koala, etc. After kicking around several names they finally agreed on the mascot Bon Bon Joey, the chocolate loving kangaroo. Their operation started off small, selling bon bons to tourists on the streets of Sydney. Foreigners loved the sweets as well as the mascot and brought the delicious products back to their home countries. It wasn’t long before orders began to come in from overseas, people from around the globe began to clamor for the delicious chocolates embodied by the loveable mascot Bon Bon Joey whose infamy was growing along with the popularity of the candy he represented. The sky was the limit for Bon Bon Joey, his face began to become synonymous with the tastiness of chocolate sweets. Bon Bon Joey t-shirts, hats, and various other forms of paraphernalia sold like mad, making Joey and Edgar rich beyond their wildest dreams. Unfortunately those dreams came crashing down one fateful night when John Bon Jovi’s world tour brought him into Sydney, where he was greeted by a large billboard containing the face of Bon Bon Joey, Australia’s chocolate kangaroo sweetheart. John Bon was so offended by Bon Bon that he took the company to court to stop them from using his likeness to sell chocolate. Even though poor Bon Bon Joey had nothing to do with John Bon Jovi (and John Bon Jovi doesn’t look like a chocolate kangaroo) John Bon won the case in front of an international judge who hated chocolate and loved hair. Joey Smithy and Edgar Brown had to forfeit 300 million dollars to John Bon Jovi and stop doing business with the mascot Bon Bon Joey, the cornerstone of their company. The name Bon Bon Joey went the way of the Do Do bird, into the annals of extinction.
